

Horace Dale Johnson was born on December 17, 1949 to Horace and Iradean Gwin Johnson in Cleveland, Ohio. Horace was a proud soldier, devoted husband, loving father, beloved brother, respected family leader, and steadfast friend whose life was defined by service, loyalty, and joy.
A longtime resident of Riverview, Florida. Horace lived a life filled with purpose, devotion, and love. He found Christ at an early age and later became a member of the First Baptist Church of Progress Village where he was Baptized and later became a Deacon Board Member.
Horace honorably served his country for 21 years in the United States Army and the Army National Guard, rising through the ranks to become Sergeant Major—a testament to his leadership, dedication, and commitment to his fellow soldiers and country. His devotion to veterans continued long after his active duty; he most recently served as AMVETS Immediate Past National Commander, advocating tirelessly for the welfare and recognition of those who served.
Alongside his distinguished military career, Horace devoted 37 years to the United States Postal Service, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and rose to the esteemed position of Postmaster. Known for his integrity, discipline, and compassion, he left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of working with him. Horace’s commitment to service extended beyond his professional life, as he generously ministered, mentored, guided, and supported anyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
Beyond his career and public service, Horace lived life with warmth and enthusiasm. He loved playing bid whist with family and friends, and traveling the world on cruise ships with his beloved wife and life partner, Toni Johnson. A passionate supporter of Cleveland and Tampa sports teams, Horace cheered every game with the same heart and spirit he brought to every part of his life. Above all, he cherished sharing wisdom and laughter with his siblings, children and grandchildren—his greatest pride and joy.
Sergeant Major (Ret.) Horace Dale Johnson departed this life on November 4, 2025, at the age of 75, in a VA Hospital after a short battle with cancer. He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted
wife Toni of twenty seven years; his loving children Marilyn Holt, Tonia Holt Daniels (Donell), William Calhoun (Regina), Felicia Osei (Kingsley), Horace D Johnson, Willie Mann III, Jamie Johnson of, Michelle McLendon (Keith) and Tonya Boudreaux, sisters Almaree Banks, Joanne Johnson, Winifred Randolph (Donald), Frieda Johnson, brothers Robert Kidd (Lydia), Delbert Johnson, Kevin Johnson (Anita), Karnell Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio; Gary Johnson (Punkin) of Cleveland, Ohio; and Bobby Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace Johnson Sr and Iradean Gwin Woodson, sisters Mary Johnson and Linda Johnson; brothers James Johnson and Lonnie Johnson.
Horace is also survived by a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, and life-long friends.
Horace’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who were blessed to know him. His strength, humor, and unwavering love for family and country will never be forgotten.
A visitation will be held 5-9 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2025 at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home, 2323 West Brandon Boulevard, Brandon, Florida.
