Howard is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of over 50 years, Rita J. Gilliam; his daughters, Tasha Rodgers and Jasmine Gilliam Arenas; his cherished granddaughters, Gabrielle Rodgers and Angelina Arenas; and his beloved nieces, Ana Gilliam and Veronica Whitten, whom he helped raise as his own daughters. He also leaves behind many extended family members, lifelong friends, and countless individuals whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
Howard was born on January 14, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Fred and Darleetha Gilliam. He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. His military service reflected the courage, discipline, and dedication that would characterize the rest of his life.
In 1970, Howard married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Rita. Together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family. After settling in Virginia, Howard began a distinguished career as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service. Together, Howard and Rita welcomed their daughters, Tasha and Jasmine, as well as their nieces, Ana and Veronica, into their home, raising all four young women with unconditional love, guidance, and strong values. Howard was also blessed to welcome his son-in-law, Pastor Terron Rodgers, into the family when he married his daughter, Tasha, more than 20 years ago. Howard loved Terron as a son and was proud to watch the family they built together.
His family remembers him as the ultimate provider—a man who led by example through hard work, integrity, and selfless sacrifice. He continually encouraged those he loved to pursue their dreams, remain steadfast in their faith, and serve Yeshua wholeheartedly.
Howard lived a life devoted to serving Yah and others. He found joy in cultivating beauty as a horticulturist, mastering the game of billiards, and riding horses with a passion for the Western lifestyle. Above all, he was deeply committed to ministry, dedicating countless hours volunteering in men's prison ministries across the United States, sharing hope, encouragement, and the love of God with those seeking a second chance.
Howard's legacy is one of faith, compassion, humility, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. His gentle spirit, quiet strength, and generous heart will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A Celebration of Howard's Life will be held at 11:00am at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Gardens, 2323 West Brandon Boulevard, Brandon, Florida 33511. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate the remarkable life of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, veteran, mentor, and friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation in Howard's honor.
Condolences may be sent to Rita J. Gilliam.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the physicians, nurses, and staff of the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital for the compassionate care, kindness, and dignity they provided to Howard during his final days.
