Born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, to Carl Russell Coldren and Sophie Louise Emge Coldren. James lived a life rooted in deep faith, quiet service, and devotion to his family. Having grown up in a military family, he spent his formative years in Europe and the Middle East, experiences that broadened his perspective and appreciation for other cultures. When he came of age, he followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the United States Air Force, where he traveled internationally and experienced different cultures. After completing his military service, James earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Science from the University of Florida, continuing a lifelong commitment to learning, discipline, and achievement.
James was employed at GTE for more than 30 years retiring as a Director of Sales Engineering. After retirement he worked for Intermedia Communications as a Sales Engineer until he decided to retire for good. He was known for his exceptional work ethic, unwavering integrity, and quiet humility. He believed in doing what was right, honoring his commitments, and approaching his responsibilities with dedication and grace. These principles guided his professional life and the example he set for those around him.
Throughout his life, James enjoyed a variety of hobbies that reflected his curiosity, ingenuity, and willingness to try new things. He enjoyed making his own beer, had a love of photography in both capturing and editing an image, became a licensed pilot at the age of 60, treasured researching his family ancestry, and was a licensed Ham radio operator. He also enjoyed rebuilding antique radios, combining his technical skills with an appreciation for the craftsmanship of the past. At home, he took pleasure in creating his own special blend of birdseed for the feeders in his backyard, where he could watch and enjoy the many unique birds that visited. Whether exploring a new interest, working with his hands, or quietly observing nature, James found joy in learning, creating, and discovering new things throughout his life.
For 45 wonderful years, James shared his life with his beloved wife, Carol Ann, building a home grounded in love, commitment, and family. Together, they blended their families and shared in the lives of their children: Theresa, James (Debbie Kay), Kelli, Michele (David), Debi (Paul), and Theodore. Victoria F. Coldren, his first wife whom he met in the Philippines, also remains an important part of his life story and is remembered with affection.
James took great pride in his 12 grandchildren: Amanda, Horace Adam, Alan, Morgan, Kayla, Toby, Sam, Haley, Dylan, Brenna, Madison, and Amelia; and his 12 great-grandchildren: Haley, Olivia Grace, Logan, Henry, Lucy, Olivia, Mary Palmer, Sawyer, Charlie, Amber, Madison, and soon-to-arrive Baby Godwin-Ritchie. He is also survived by his brother, Lawrence Coldren (Susie). He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Barbara Louise Coldren Pfetsch. His family was a source of great joy, and the love he shared with each generation will remain a lasting part of his legacy.
James was a faithful and active member of Nativity Catholic Church, where he served in the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) for 27 years, and as a Eucharistic Minister, and with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for 11 years. He and Carol Ann were awarded the St. Jude the Apostle Medal from the Diocese of St. Petersburg for distinguished and outstanding service. His faith was reflected not only in his devotion to the Church but also in his willingness to serve others with humility and compassion.
James will be remembered for his deep faith, steadfast character, and quiet dedication to the people and responsibilities he held dear. The example he set through his work, his service, and his love for his family will continue to inspire those who knew him.
