Few people have brightened up a room as has Jerry Scott. He was a consummate showman, a jokester, and friend.
Jerry was born on September 4, 1945 in Seattle Washington to Earl and Eileen Scott, while Earl was in the Pacific at the time. He was the fourth of five children. Jerry was most known as a skilled harmonica player and musician.
As with many people, he moved around a lot. After attending schools in several different locations he came to Minot, where he graduated from Minot High in 1963. He worked at the old Kresge Dime Store in downtown Minot until he went into the US Army, and served from 1965 to 1968, both in San Francisco as well as in Bitburg, Germany. Following his time in the army he returned to Minot, where he resided for decades. It was while he attended Minot State that he started his first band, Lucifer B. Tykes. While he played banjo, guitar, bass, washtub bass, and a variety of other instruments, his signature feature was the Orange Blossom Special played with four blues harmonicas.
In addition to the Tykes, he played in a variety of bands both nationally and locally. He served as secretary/treasurer of the American Federation of Musicians in Minot. By 1999, he had decided to try a different aspect of life and drover semis for Werner Trucking for several years, based out of the greater Tampa/Brandon area. The same year, he married Renee, who has been his wonderful companion ever since.
In recent years he was active in the Amvets Post #44 in Plant City, as well as the Brandon Eagles Aerie #3356. He was also a guest sit in with the local Harmoniguys group in Sun City, FL. Mostly he enjoyed life, driving his golf cart at exciting speeds, working on various projects from motorcycle to tricycles to other mechanical items. Mostly he enjoyed being with people. He was always quick with a joke or a story of some sort. These traits have carried on with those closest to him.
He is survived by his wonderful wife, Renee; sons Cord (Rachel) Scott, Tokyo, Japan, and Micah Scott, Rugby, ND; step-children Heather Leier (Minot, ND), Chris Zimmerman (Minot, ND), Farrah (Jesse Lunzman) Southam (Talent, OR); siblings, Jim, Jackie, and Julie Scott, several grandchildren and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judith.
If one could, please raise a glass and think of him fondly, scotch and water, please.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the AM-Vets Post 44 of Plant City on Friday, October 13, 2017 at a time to be announced.
