The funeral service for Mrs. Joan I Chambers, 84, of Tampa FL, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday April 21, 2018, at Stowers Funeral Home. Mrs. Chambers passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Lucille McCabe her husband, Joseph J Chambers; a brother, Earl McCabe. She was born and raised in Chicago, Ill. Mrs. Chambers graduated Nursing school and moved to Florida with her parents. She meet and married the love of her life while both working at the hospital in Bradenton Fl. They moved to Tampa after they were married. She worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital where she started at the 7th Ave location in June of 1959 and moved to their current location on MLK in 1967. Joan was asked by Sister Loretta Mary to take over the Central Supply Department and became the first female director. Mrs.Chambers was a strong woman with great motivational skills and became a perfect fit for the position. Mrs. Chambers retired after 36 ½ years of service at SJH. Joan returned to work for the HomeCare division of BayCare Health Systems for 8 more years as PRN for a total of 44 and a ½ years of service. She was Catholic by faith, and a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Joan is survived by her 4 children son Patrick Chambers; daughters, Lori Chambers Everett, Dana Higgins (John III), and Elizabeth VanHout (John Jr.); grandchildren, Ginger Chambers, Magen Everett, John IV, & Amanda Higgins, and John III, Austin, Karlie(Thomas Light) and Justin VanHout; One great-grandchild Anthony Cecina Jr.. Grand puppies Potato, Mugsy, and Bailey Grand kitty Betty. Her grandchildren say that Heaven has gained an extraordinary angel. Joan will be deeply missed by all she was defiantly one of a kind!
