Valrico, FL — John Thomas Nelson, known to family and friends as Tom, passed away on Sunday morning, September 6, 2026, at the age of 91. He was born on April 5, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, to John Thomas Nelson and Adeline DeRubis Nelson.
Tom was raised in Chicago and graduated from Austin High School. After high school and a tour in the U.S. Army, he began his career with Amsted Industries. His work there made him a world-class traveler, with assignments that took him to Japan, France, Sweden, and Italy. Those travels gave Tom a lifetime of stories—filled with both joys and mishaps—and brought him friendships from around the world.
Tom is survived by his Wife, Cyndi Nelson; his Son, Tom Nelson; his Grandson, Tommy Nelson, his Daughter, Julie Nelson; his Granddaughter, Sarah Scheer; his Bonus Daughter, Heather Estrada; Manny Estrada; his Bonus Granddaughters, Ashley Reyes; proceeded in death by Gabriella Wiegert, his Bonus Son, Anthony Jordan; and the Jordan Clan: Lyn, Liane, Xhantelle, Caleb, Vinny, and Enzo.
Tom loved many things in life: his Family, music—especially Frank Sinatra—corny jokes, old English sports cars, bridge, handball, tennis, pickleball, playing the trumpet, and a good glass of scotch. Above all, Tom had a remarkable gift for making everyone he encountered feel better for having known him. He will be deeply missed and remembered forever.
The Family would like to acknowledge and thank Accent Hospice for their care and support, especially Evelyn and Juan for their loving care.
