Born to Myron and Wilma Romberger in Endicott New York on February 22, 1941. Having been born in New York, he would sometimes joke, “guess you could call me a Yankee” but those who knew him would agree he was a Florida guy through and through. It was in Florida that him and his younger brother Al Romberger grew up, learning from one another, trying not to get into too much mischief throughout their youth. Most profoundly though, it is in Hillsborough county that he fell in love with his first wife, Barbara Wood, building a family of their own with three children: Shari, Kenny, and Lori. Sadly, Barbara was taken from this world far too young. He did go on to love again though, marrying his wife Nicki Romberger. Their marriage brought together two families, making the Romberger family even bigger, and better, as she had three children of her own: Donald, Stephanie, and Nathan. In the years to come, he would have nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, all of whom shared a very special and unique bond with their Papa.
He built his career as a finish carpenter, earning the title of apprentice of the year in the State of Florida, upon completion of his apprenticeship. Johnny was not defined by work, though. He was a man who understood the importance of living life and having a good time, making the most of his time here on earth. He spent much of his time doing the things he enjoyed most: fishing, diving, camping, water skiing, and spending time with his family and friends.
Many have memories of him teaching them various things, whether it be how to fish, or perhaps just enjoy a cold beer or glass of Jack Daniels because, the truth is, he really didn’t catch many fish in his lifetime.
He loved and touched the lives of those who were blessed to know him. The world will certainly be different without him, but we can all find joy and comfort in the memories he’s given us.
