Memorial Tribute for Aunt Fischl (Linda).

On Friday, 24th of July 2026, my beloved aunt, Linda Fairburn, passed away peacefully at the age of 90.

In the 1960s, she married Don, a U.S. Army soldier in Bayreuth, Germany, and emigrated to the United States later that decade. Their journey together reflected more than a personal love story—it embodied the remarkable reconciliation and enduring friendship between Germany and the United States. Military assignments brought them back to Germany several times, including Mannheim and Munich, before they eventually made their home near Tampa, Florida.

My uncle served two tours in Vietnam before continuing his public service as a Deputy Sheriff with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Florida. Growing up, I listened to my family's stories about Vietnam, 9/11, and the profound changes in the world after 2000. Years later, during my own deployment to Afghanistan, I often found myself reflecting on those conversations. They had transformed history from something I had read about into something deeply personal.

My first visit to the United States in 2004 opened a new chapter in our family story. Over the years, I was fortunate to share unforgettable moments and wonderful journeys with them—in Florida and to the Cayman Islands, Honduras, Belize, Mexico, the British West Indies, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Those memories will remain with me forever.

In 2023, during a visit to New York and Florida, I had the privilege of sharing one final lunch with my aunt. Looking back, I am deeply grateful for that opportunity, even though I did not know it would be our last time together.

Rest in peace, dear Aunt.

Thank you for your kindness, your warmth, and for being part of a remarkable chapter in both our family's history and the enduring friendship between our two nations.

You will never be forgotten.
