Mike proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army for a combined 22 years, retiring from the Army with the rank of Master Sergeant. During his distinguished military career, he completed four tours in Vietnam including three extensions and served in Special Forces and Airborne units. His dedication, courage, and sacrifice were recognized through numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Master Parachutist Badge and the coveted Ranger Tab, among many other honors.
Following his military service, Mike remained a man of strength, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. He was known for his deep appreciation of military history, his love of Ford vehicles, and his gift for storytelling. He could captivate a room with a story, always delivered with humor, conviction, and a perspective uniquely his own.
Though he often expressed his love through actions rather than words, there was never any doubt about his devotion to his family or beloved friends. He was fiercely protective, dependable, and would do anything for the people he cared about. One of his greatest joys was being “Grumps” to his grandchildren.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Jennifer Potter; his daughter, Jessica (Potter) Chow, and her husband, Luke Chow; and his cherished grandchildren, Henry, Bishop, and Emerson, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. He is also survived by his half siblings, Susan Sarra Kelly and Patrick Potter and stepsiblings Lee Bullock, Wendy Perelli. He was predeceased by his parents and stepsiblings Lana (Bullock) Webb and Mark Bullock.
He leaves behind a legacy of service, resilience, loyalty, and love. While his family wishes for more time, more stories, and more memories, they are profoundly grateful for the years they shared and the example he set through a life lived with honor and dedication.
Mike will be remembered always as a soldier, husband, father, grandfather, storyteller, and friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at O’Brien’s, 701 West Lumsden Road, Brandon, Florida 33511.
