Nivian was born on November 14, 1936 to Eduardo Arroyo and Rosario Ruiz in Ponce, Puerto Rico. At age six, Nivian’ s father died at an early age and her now “single mother” moved her four young sons and Nivian to New York City to begin a new life.
After graduating high school, Nivian received a graduation gift which was a trip back to Puerto Rico where she met her future husband, Raul A Canals.
As her journey in life continues, Raul and Nivian marry, and Raul joins the Air Force where they received orders to go to Hawaii. While stationed in Hawaii they welcomed their first child, Yvette. After being transferred to McGuire AFB, New Jersey, they were blessed again to welcome Richard, 15 months later.
Nivian had a successful 35-year career as a United States Civil Servant working at various locations around the world. Nivian’ s vivacious personality and ability to handle multiple responsibilities with such ease, earned her the rank GS-11.
In their retirement years, Nivian and Raul traveled the United States in their RV’s chasing new adventures and along the way, making new friends. Embracing their newfound freedom of leisure, they left the more restrictive life of the military behind.
Nivian was predeceased by her parents, Eduardo and Rosario Arroyo, and five brothers, Eduardo, Gelaberto, Antonio, Hector, and Israel.
Nivian is survived by her loving spouse Raul, her two children, Yvette and Richard. Also survived by daughter in law Deena Gilbert Canals, and son in law Daniel Willette. Grandson Richard Brian Canals and great grandchildren Natalya Telles and Nathaniel Canals. Along with sister-in-law Julia Arroyo (Hector’s wife) and many nieces and nephews.
