With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Rafael Martinez at the age of 91. Rafael was born on March 29, 1935, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and passed away on July 28, 2026, at his home in Seffner, Florida, surrounded by his loved ones.
Throughout his nine decades of life, Rafael touched countless people with his generosity, love, compassion, wisdom, and leadership—all layered with his unique sense of humor. He maintained a positive attitude no matter what life brought his way, and he lit up every room with his infectious charm.
Whether it was one of his famous greetings—“Aloha, how are ya!”—his smile, or his laugh, you couldn’t help but smile along with him. Even when carrying burdens of your own, Rafael created an atmosphere of joy and lightness that continues today through the memories he gave us. And, of course, there was his well-known Martinez sarcasm, which has been lovingly passed down through generations—from his seven children to his grandchildren and beyond.
Rafael was the perfect role model and wore many hats throughout his long and remarkable life. He was a veteran who bravely served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a devout Christian and spiritual leader who could still quote Scripture well into his 90s. He taught his family to always put God first, followed by family.
He was a devoted father who raised his children in Chicago, working every job he could to ensure they had everything they needed. Later, as a retired grandfather in Florida, he helped raise his grandchildren and gave them priceless tropical memories that have continued across generations, even to family members across multiple states.
Rafael was also a provider and source of support for many in his community. In Chicago, he purchased a building where his loved ones could live safely, its halls filled with laughter, music, and love. Later, in Florida, the doors to each of his homes were always open.
Rafael is survived by his wonderful wife of more than 68 years, Candita Martinez, and by the extraordinary family legacy they built together: their seven children, Rafael Jr, Maribel, Ana Rosa, Alfredo, Vilma, Nelson, and Roberto; 20 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, with two more great-great-grandchildren on the way.
A viewing will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hillsboro Funeral Home, 2323 W. Brandon Blvd., Brandon, FL 33511. A memorial service will be held the following day, Wednesday, August 5, 2026, from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m., with a final viewing from 10:30 to 10:50 a.m. The burial will take place from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
