MAHONEY, Richard Emmett "Dick", 89, died in his home surrounded by loved ones on June 13, 2017. An honorably discharged USMC WWII and Korean War veteran, he attended Auburn University but left to enter the construction industry. A general contractor in commercial construction and renovation, he co-owned Mahoney & Strub, Const. Co, Tampa, and worked throughout Florida. He lived a determined, fierce, full life with his wife of 70 years, Betsy Sommerkamp Mahoney, who survives him. Together they raised six (surviving) children, Sharon, Susie, Shelia, Richard, Sandra and Patrick, who along with their surviving spouses; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren, plus two more on the way; his surviving sister, Maureen; and nieces and nephews, miss him deeply. His larger than life personality, imposing frame, and booming voice commanded attention. Every bit a man's man he spent free time with friends or with family on the water in one of his boats or at his cabin in the woods. Both lovable and exasperating, he drew friends with his self-confidence, boldness and brash humor. His children, their friends, nieces and nephews found his full attention a mixed blessing, hoping for approval yet dreading disappointment, all were alerted to be on their best behavior and effort. There was nothing retiring about him. It's hard to imagine a world without his presence. A memorial service will be held 12 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Hillsboro Memorial Funeral Home.
