Dear Mary,

 I am so sorry for your loss.
 I am sitting in John Bowne HS (room 234) this Tuesday afternoon thinking about you (and your terrific children!). I didn't know Steve, but I think he must have been thoughtful and kind and strong and smart,  being your husband, Mary. 
Please know you are missed here in New York, at John Bowne. 
I will pray that you find peace and can restore happiness and purpose for yourself in the near future.

Where do I start?  How does one put into words what they’re feeling when they lose a parent? My father was a man who sacrificed for his family. He made us feel like the most important people in his life no matter what. He was funny, caring, strong, loving and dedicated.  He introduced me to Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. He raised me on Queen and The Beatles. He was a one of a kind man. I am so grateful for all the years I had with him. I wouldn’t have traded him for anything but I would trade everything to have him back!  I am sitting here coming to the realization that my father is gone and this pain is unbearable. I love you daddy and I miss you! 

I love you daddy. I have measured every man I meet against you as you taught me what a man and father should be and how I should be treated. You always made the time to make me feel special, whether it was a trip to the mall, just the two of us or telling me about the new book you were reading. You introduced me to sci-fi and fantasy, to spy novels and James Bond movies. You never made me feel bad for any choices I made in life and you were always there when I needed you. I wish we had more time, I wish you had more time with mom in your postcard you worked so hard for. I hope you know how much we love, respect and admire you. I miss you so much
