

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Charles Ugwu, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, and respected community member. Charles was born on January 10, 1971, in Umachi, Enugu Ezike, Nigeria, to Moses and Christiana Ugwu. He passed away on August 1, 2024, at the age of 53.
-A Life of Achievement and Service
Charles' academic journey began with a BSc in Microbiology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His pursuit of knowledge took him to Japan, where he received a full-ride scholarship to the University of Tsukuba. There, he earned both his MSc and PhD in Biotechnology. After graduation, Charles became a Senior Researcher, contributing his expertise to prestigious scientific research centers in Japan and Italy.
Later in life, Charles and his family relocated to Brantford, Ontario, Canada, where he became the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Chief Officer at Wilfrid Laurier University. His passion for teaching led him to share his knowledge as an instructor at Conestoga and Anderson Colleges.
-A Devoted Family Man
Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Charles cherished his role as a husband and father above all. He balanced his work and family life with unwavering dedication. He found great joy in spending quality time with his family and was a dedicated supporter of his children’s activities. Whether cheering them on at basketball, volleyball, swimming, piano, or dance classes, Charles was always there, often with his favorite medium-sized, one-cream Tim Hortons coffee in hand.
-A Pillar of the Community
Charles was deeply committed to his community. He offered free mentorship to his colleagues, friends, students and siblings, embodying generosity and support. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, he actively participated in numerous charitable and fundraising activities tailored to those in need. Additionally, he served as an extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, bringing comfort to the sick and homebound.
-Passions and Interests
Charles had a passion for basketball and was affectionately known as the “Toronto Raptors' #1 fan.” He also enjoyed watching wrestling and soccer, hobbies that brought him great joy.
-Family and Loved Ones
Charles was predeceased by his father, Moses Ugwu, and his sister, Patricia Ekete. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Rosemary Ugwu; his children, Michael, Jenna, and Serena; his mother, Christiana; his siblings, Amaka, Ike, Ifeanyi, and Toochi; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
