Josephine Elizabeth MacKinnon

March 19, 1928July 19, 2020

Josephine passed away peacefully after a brief illness on July 19, 2020, surrounded by the love of her family.

She is now reunited with her husband Bernie (1987) and her parents Ambrose and Pauline Cantar. Josie was a very loving mother to Mark (Linda), Camella, Bob (Kathy), Louise (Howard), Rick (Karen), Larry, and Dennis (Leslie). Josie was a very proud Grama to sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Sister to Carmella Vella (Joseph), John Cantar (Lorna) both deceased, and Phyllis Curry, deceased (Joseph). Josie was a sister-in-law to many in the MacKinnon clan and she had many nieces and nephews. Josie was born in Brantford and lived most of her 92 years here. She was an active member of St. Basil’s Parish, the CWL, and the Choir. Josie thoroughly enjoyed working at many of the bazaars and rummage sales and helping out where ever she could. Josie loved to crochet and made many blankets for her family over the years. In her early days, Josie worked downtown at Kresge’s and Zellers. When Zeller’s closed, she went to work for Eaton’s before she retired. Josie was able to visit Malta (the birthplace of her parents) twice with family in her later years. She loved Malta and treasured those memories. Josie also had many furry friends over the years, and she especially loved her cats. Special thanks to the staff at Brierwood Gardens for their excellent care of Josie during the past year. Arrangements have been entrusted to Thorpe Brothers Funeral Home. Due to the restrictions of COVID 19, a private family service will be held in the chapel. Donations in Josie’s name to St. Basil’s Church (519-752-0361) or the Brantford SPCA (519-756-6620) would be appreciated by the family. May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the sun shine warm upon your face and until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I was deeply saddened to learn of your mom's death. She was a remarkable lady. Gracious and kind and she so loved her family. I remember her fondly from as far back as 1976.
She rests in God's care now. God's peace upon all of you.

Josie was my sweetheart Grandmother. We had a special relationship. She was an influential , strong woman in my life growing up. I learned so much from her. I loved listening to her life stories and lessons. Back in the day she always had a cup of tea in her hand, and was such a great listener. We shared many long conversations about cooking, and life, during our weekly lunches. She always held such grace and was someone I looked up to. Grama Josie helped me plan my wedding. We had such fun together. She also helped me prepare to become a Mother. We would walk the Market or Zellers together while she pushed the stroller with pride. I valued our time together and I knew every moment was precious.
Forever in our hearts.

Josie was a loving, warm and intelligent woman with a very kind heart. In my conversations with her, she only saw the good in everyone and made it a point of saying that she loved all of her children, her daughter–in–laws, son–in–law, and all her grandchildren. Josie had an elegant and quiet way about her, but she had an inner strength that I admired and recognized was needed in order to raise such a large family. I visited with her while she was in the hospital for her hip surgery and then at Parkwood while she recovered, a little over a year ago. She enjoyed talking about her family, singing in the choir and how much she enjoyed working at Zeller’s, Kresge’s and Eaton’s. Josie said I was her friend. I will miss this wonderful woman. My deepest condolences to the MacKinnon Family.
