

Dan leaves behind his wife of 61 years, Judy Anderson Papineau; brother Marc and wife Patricia; son Greg and wife Cindy; son Tad and wife Nancy; son Scott; son Luke; daughter Kim Eckert and husband Paul; daughter Nicole Richard and husband Brian; daughter-in-law Judy Griffith-Papineau; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Roger, son Brooks and daughter Mary.
Dan was born September 19, 1931, to Armand Joseph Papineau of Saint-Cesaire, Quebec, and Doris Daniel of Granby, Quebec, in Buffalo, NY. He attended elementary and high school in Kenmore, NY, and received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, in 1955.
In 1956, Dan graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, and earned a commission in the U.S. Navy. During his three years as a commissioned U.S. Naval Officer, he served at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station (NUWES, now NUWC) in Keyport, WA. At this time, Dan joined the Civil Service at NUWES and later retired as Head of Production Planning after 30 years of service.
During the same period, Dan also served as Executive Officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Eighteen. He was very proud the Battalion was recognized with the prestigious Rear Admiral John R. Perry Award while Executive Officer. In 1976, he resigned his Commission with the rank of Commander. Dan also owned and managed several rental properties.
Dan was very active in many community volunteer efforts. Working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bremerton he started Project HELP, which provides people in the community with a free day of home maintenance, including plumbing and electrical repairs. Dan started a furniture manufacturing operation to help generate income for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bremerton. In 2000, he joined Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County, WA, where he became a Project Director, building homes locally and abroad for families in need.
Dan was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in Bremerton for more than 55 years. His parish activities included choral singing, Eucharistic Minister, work on multiple boards, helping with construction of the new school gymnasium and the education of his seven children.
Dan especially enjoyed skiing, running, sailing, handball, cycling and the Seahawks. His many hobbies included woodworking; choral singing at Puget Sound Stage in Bremerton where he performed in The Mikado and with the Kitsap choral group, The Puget Soundsters. His favorite songs were from the 1965 musical The Sound of Music.
More than anything, Dan was most proud of “raising seven children to be responsible citizens with my wife, Judy.” Dan will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic church, 500 Veneta Ave. in Bremerton, March 3 at 10 am. Rosary prayers will begin at 11 am, with a funeral mass led by Father Derek Lappe and assisted by Deacons Greg Papineau and Bill Hamlin at 11:30 am. A reception will follow at 12:30 pm at Camerman Hall in the church basement.
Interment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 5505 Kitsap Way, Bremerton at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that mass intention requests be made for Dan, as well as donations to Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County, 3559 Wheaton Way, Bremerton, WA 98310, or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 2403 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77021.
