Emmett Edward “Ed” Ahrens, Jr. was a witty and wise man, and it is difficult to encapsulate his whole life in a few paragraphs. Ed was a true character. His support and friendship will be missed by all those who knew him, but he will always be in their hearts. His memory will be especially cherished by his daughters, Sarah and Katy, who loved and cared for him deeply. Ed will be reunited in heaven with his soulmate, his wife, Victoria “Viki” and his bud, his son Travis.
Ed had a wonderful, dry sense of humor, liked to take it easy, and had a saying for almost everything. He loved gathering around a table and having a lively conversation with family and friends, often lingering long after the meal ended.
If life has a soundtrack, Ed’s featured rock n’ roll, and it marked many occasions in his life both big and small. He always had music playing, whether at home or on the road. Ed was a sonic explorer. He enjoyed discovering something new, either from an up-and-coming band or while revisiting an old favorite. Ed loved live music, and went to concerts and musicals as often as he could.
Ed respected and found adventure in being out in nature. The mountains, forests, rivers, and oceans offered him solace. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, backpacking, and camping with family and friends. At home, Ed liked playing and watching sports, especially football. The Dallas Cowboys were his team, not just America’s. He also appreciated new and old classic movies (just no horror, please), a wide variety of television shows, and enthralling books.
Ed was born in December 1947 in Fort Worth, Texas and grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas with his parents, Emmett and Blanche, and his sister, Dinah Sue. He married Victoria “Viki” Kamm of Detroit, Michigan, in Texas in 1974. They had three children: Travis, Sarah, and Katy.
Ed and Viki had an exceptional bond full of love, laughter, and support, which was remarked upon by many who knew them. They connected over their shared love of music, the outdoors, and a yearning for adventure. Ed and Viki embraced a new journey when they had the opportunity to move to Alaska in the 1980s. They settled in Eagle River, Alaska, 15 miles north of Anchorage, with Sarah and Katy. Living in the Last Frontier, the family got to enjoy even more of what nature provided. They moved to Silverdale, Washington in the early 1990s. The family’s love of the outdoors continued as they explored the Pacific Northwest, this time in their beloved Minnie-Winnie motorhome, blaring music as they drove.
Ed and Viki gave their two girls a home full of love. Ed was an incredible dad, who listened and gave counsel when needed, guided by example, and encouraged them to find their own way. Life can be hard sometimes, but Ed found a way to ease the hardships through humor. Ed and Viki were proud of the independent women they raised.
Viki sadly passed away in 2012 before she and Ed got to enjoy a retirement full of new adventures together. Ed still found joy travelling around Europe with Katy, visiting countless castles and museums. Hiking the Swiss Alps was a true highlight for him.
Ed was a devoted and hard-working provider for his family and took great pride in serving his community. He graduated from the University of North Texas in 1971 with a degree in finance. His career started in insurance at Reliance Group, Inc. In 1976, Ed and Viki, always the adventurers, decided to take a grand road trip, camping and backpacking around the US and Canada, seeking out what they truly wanted in life. After returning, Ed earned his Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license from the State of Texas in 1981. He began his corporate accounting career at ARCO, an oil and gas company, working in both their Dallas and Anchorage offices. Ed earned his second CPA license from Washington State in 1993 and started his practice, E. Edward Ahrens, CPA, in Silverdale. One of Ed’s business clients, eAcceleration Corp, a computer technology company in Poulsbo, asked him to take on a bigger role as their Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2002. He worked there until his retirement in 2014. Ed was involved in the Lutheran church in every community he lived in, including St. John’s United Lutheran Church in Grand Prairie, Texas; Joy Lutheran Church in Eagle River, Alaska; and Silverdale Lutheran Church in Silverdale, Washington. Ed was a proud Rotatarian and a member of the Silverdale Rotary Club for decades. He enjoyed the club’s annual charity fundraisers during the Whaling Days Festival, selling ducks for the Great Kitsap Duck Race and organizing, for a number of years, the Pancake Breakfast. He valued the weekly meetings and camaraderie among the business community.
Ed will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts and souls - for he never forgot us and we will never forget him. He is preceded in death by his wife, Viki; son, Travis; father and mother; close cousin, Billy Hodges; and other family members. He is survived by his daughters, Sarah and Katy; his sister, Dinah Sue; and many extended family members and dear, lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held in his honor on October 24, 2026 at 1:00pm at Silverdale Lutheran Church.
