Earl Donald Cain

With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Earl Donald Cain, affectionately known to family and friends as “Pop, / Papa Earl”on the morning of June 13, 2026, at the age of 94.

Born on July 17, 1931, in the Hazelwood community of Cincinnati, Ohio, Earl was the son of Walter Albert Cain Sr. and Ella B. (Hill) Cain. He was the fourth eldest of twelve children and grew up surrounded by the love, laughter, and resilience of a large family. He attended White Oak and Sycamore High Schools before leaving home as a young man to begin a life of adventure and service by enlisting in the United States Navy.

That decision launched a remarkable journey that would take him around the world and shape the man he would become. During his naval career, Earl rose through the enlisted ranks to become a Petty Officer First Class (E-6), retiring after 20 years of honorable service to his country. While stationed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington, he formed friendships that would forever change the course of his life.

One of those friendships was with Lonny Murray, a Boilermaker tradesman, who had transferred with his wife, Geraldine, from the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard in New York. Lonny and Geraldine fell in love with the Pacific Northwest and encouraged their daughter, Roberta Murray, to move to Bremerton with her children. Through a little matchmaking and a lot of fate, Earl and Roberta found one another and were married in 1970.

With that marriage, Earl became an instant father to eight children, embracing the role with love, patience, and unwavering commitment. He never distinguished between them being his step-children. He simply became “Pop”.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Roberta Cain, in 2006 and his eldest daughter, Novelina “Novie” Manney, who passed away in 2021; his parents, Walter Albert Cain Sr. and Ella B. Cain; brothers William Cain Sr., Walter Albert Cain Jr., Arthur Lee Cain, and Lawrence Cain; and sisters Ruth Doris Noble, Mary Francis Long, and Vivian Louise Sanders.

Earl leaves behind a loving family who knew him simply as Pop: Christine “Tina”, whose devoted caregiving sustained him for many years following Roberta’s passing; Lonny Moore and wife Lisa; Ada Moore Delacruz; Charlene Hickey and husband Tom Hickey; Alise Marinov and husband Mark Marinov; Essie Hatfield; and William Hamilton. He is also lovingly remembered by his son-in-law Glenn Manney.

His family grew far beyond those first eight children. Earl was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him tremendous pride and joy.

After retiring from the Navy, Earl began a second successful career with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Seattle on Lake Union, serving as a Chief Steward. Following twenty years of dedicated service, he retired again in 2001.

Faith remained central throughout Earl’s life. He was a devoted and active member of House of Refuge Ministry, where he found fellowship, purpose, and opportunities to serve others.

Although his travels slowed after retirement, Earl never forgot where he came from. He made several trips back to Cincinnati to visit his beloved family. He especially loved the times he spent at his nephew, Reynard (Ronnie) and wife Gail Cain’s home where he was always welcomed with open arms. He cherished the reunions there, delighted in hearing family stories and updates, and treasured every opportunity to be surrounded by those he loved.

One of Earl’s greatest passions was cooking. His love of the culinary arts was born during his years serving in Navy galleys and remained with him throughout his life. Family members fondly remember the stories he told about his days aboard ship and the meals he prepared with pride. His famous Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs became a beloved family tradition and were always in high demand at family gatherings. Whether he was preparing a meal, sharing a story, or simply sitting among family members catching up on life, Earl found joy in bringing people together.

He is survived by his brother Herbert Cain; sisters Carolyn Elizabeth DeBruce, Patricia Ann Gay, and Helen Marie Roberts, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by his presence.

To know Earl was to know loyalty, humility, strength, faith, and unconditional love. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. His steady guidance, gentle spirit, generous heart, and quiet wisdom touched generations of family members and friends.

While his family grieves his passing, they find comfort in knowing that he has been reunited with those who went before him and that his legacy lives on in the countless lives he helped shape.

The family has entrusted Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home with arrangements for cremation and interment. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
