Fred passed unexpectedly at his home on September 5, 2014. Born May 26, 1951 at Price, Utah to Frank J. and Shirley M. Nick Sr., Fred spent the first fourteen years of his life there until his father moved the family to Bremerton, Washington in search of a second career as the coal industry supporting the Price area began collapsing. Fred continued his education in the Bremerton School system until graduating from High School and then moved on to fulfill his "Dream" as a student at the University of Washington. Fred accomplished numerous personal goals, recording significant achievements along the way and graduated with degrees in Computer Science, Mathematics and Philosophy, but the "Dream" did not end there. In 1972 Fred was hired by his beloved "UofW" as Director of the Center for Social Science Computation and Research and he remained in that capacity until his recent retirement. Fred was also a "shutter-bug" extraordinaire and from very early on, his constant companion was a large bag with the latest, biggest and best camera equipment. A trip to Fred's website provided a unique display with countless photos chronicling many journeys and life experiences. Fred touched many lives over the years as instructor, mentor, advisor, expert, co-worker, friend, brother and uncle.
Fred was preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Sister Merrily Bohlmann, Sister Merlene Norval and is survived by brother Frank (Denna) of Spokane, Washington, Brother Roger of Silverdale, Washington, Uncle Martin (Charlotte) Nick, San Jose, CA., Aunt Paulmina New, Price, Utah, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A Memorial Service is scheduled for October 10, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, Bremerton, WA.
