Born January 12, 1940 in Colfax, Washington to Albert B. and Oza N. (Myers) Jacobs, she was the youngest of three children. Lillis was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Beryl C. May and brother Norman W. Jacobs.
Lillis was a gifted teacher who shared her love of ideas and art with everyone. She earned a Bachelor’s of Education at Eastern Washington State College in 1962 and started teaching English and German at the high school in Colfax. After moving to Port Orchard she taught at South Kitsap High School and Olympic College. She earned a Master’s of English at the University of Washington in 1968. She started teaching at Central Kitsap High School in 1976 and continued there until retiring 30 years later. Her teaching rested on a commitment to feminism and social justice; she treated everyone with respect and commanded authority. Her fierce love for her family and the breadth of her compassion were easily felt by all who knew her. She loved music, gardening, world literature, and travelled to Europe several times, especially Britain and Germany, where she spoke the language.
Lillis is survived by her husband of 57 years, David L. King, her sons Alexander (Christina) King of Lancaster, PA and Trevor (Kirsten) King of Seattle, grandsons Xavier and Theodore King, Zachary and Joshua King, and her nephews Albert Jacobs of Everett, Richard May of Kirkland, Michael Jacobs of Las Vegas, and niece Beryl (Jacobs) Standley of Renton, who were like brothers and sister to her.
A celebration of Lillis’s life will be held January 12th at 1pm at the Kitsap Golf & Country Club.
