Lucy Eleanor Louise Brook , age 79, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2019. She was born July 21, 1939 to Dr. Thomas and Lucy Caunt in Vancouver, B.C. She grew up, maintaining close familial ties with her older brother, Richard. Inspired by her father’s background in the medical profession, she enrolled and graduated with her nursing certification from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Victoria, B.C. alongside what would become her lifelong friend, Lois. She continued her studies in London, England, receiving midwifery certification in 1964, and returned to New Westminster, B.C. to begin her career.
After her return to Canada, she met her loving companion, Donald Brook, a U.S. Airforce veteran previously stationed in Germany and machinist for over 30 years at Keyport Naval Station. They were married on June 7, 1969 and shortly after, she received her U.S. citizenship. They relocated to Silverdale, Washington, eventually purchasing land and building their permanent residence of 50 years. She was a beloved mother, raising two children and practicing as a nurse for almost 20 years in the labor and delivery unit at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton. She was an active community member of various organizations including the Women’s VFW Auxiliary, TOPS, St. Charles and St. Antony’s Episcopal Churches, and Witty Knitters group.
Eleanor and Donald traveled extensively and after Don’s passing, Eleanor continued on. Destinations included the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, South Pacific islands, the Caribbean, South America, and Panama Canal. Eleanor was an avid collector and historical journalist, proud to recount her many adventures with all who would listen. She was a committed wife, personally attending to her husband’s care during his battle with cancer and final passing in 2008. Although Eleanor suffered from her own medical complications, she never faltered to be a driving force of nature, letting others know how things should be done and always at the helm planning her next trip. She enjoyed crocheting, reading romance novels, and following current events regarding Great Britain’s Royal Family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother and is survived by her daughter, Karen, and wife, Beth, of Keene, NH; son, David, and wife, Clare, of Bremerton, WA; two grand dogs; and numerous friends and relatives.
