

Ruby Frances Leota Atchison was born in Leone, Tutuila, American Samoa. Her mother and father were Fa'amaini Pauline Leota and William Jackson. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Stephen Atchison. Ruby is survived by her three sons; Jay Mekiafa of Bremerton, WA, Joseph of Las Vega, NV, Jesse Toloa of Pacific, WA and stepson, Douglas of Bremerton, WA; 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Ruby is also survived by her only sister, Stella Ann Leota Fa'aita of Bremerton, WA
Ruby was raised by her grandparents, Chief Leota Filimino Leah and Aifa'i Seupule llaoa Leota. Their home was a short distance from Holy Cross Catholic Church in Leone, so Ruby's early years were filled with church teachings and social community services. She attended St. Theresa Sisters School in Leone and left American Samoa in 1965 to continue her education in Whidbey Island, Washington.
Ruby's faith in God and her Catholic teachings reflected her commitment to many different organizations and groups: These includes St. Peter Chanel Samoan Ministry & Choir; Adoration (Our Lady Star of the Sea); WA Special Olympics; Polynesia Heritage Club; Tama Fanau A Leone WA; Kitisapia (Kitsap) Samoan Community; Tama & Teine; Care Giver of WA. An enthusiastic Sports Fan, Ruby was a season-ticket holder for the Seattle Seahawks. She was widely known among her family, friends and community as "Mama Hawk."
Ruby was a loving, gentle and friendly soul. She was the life of any gathering; funny, entertaining and gave freely of herself to make people laugh and enjoy life. She helped anyone in need. Ruby will be sorely missed by her family, friends and all who came to meet and know her. Her legacy will remain, forever in our hearts.
