

Walt was born April 23, 1939 in Deer Park, Wisconsin to Walter and Eva (Swanson) Zwieg, the oldest of three children. Walt graduated from Amery Wisconsin High School in 1957. After high school he enlisted in the Navy. Served on USS Granville Hall which was the backup ship for the Apollo landing. He also served on the first series of hydrofoil craft which tested on the Puget Sound.
Walt met his future wife Sharlene M (Strassburg) while stationed in San Diego, CA. They married in 1964. Sharlene had three children to bring to this union. In 1968 they had a fourth child. They made home in several places during Walt’s Navy career. The naval air station Whidbey Island, WA, Japan, Honolulu and back to the Pacific Northwest when he retired with full honors in 1978.
The family moved to Belfair, WA prior to working for Crowley Maritime Valdez, Alaska. He was assigned to the tugboat Stalwart. One of the three that pulled the Exxon Valdez Supertanker off the Prince William Bligh Reef. He worked at a couple of odd jobs before fully retiring.
After retirement Walt and Sharlene bought a winter home in Phoenix, AZ. While in Phoenix Walt was able to enjoy playing Bingo and Texas Holdem with his brother at local Vfw’s, Elks and Eagles clubs.
Walt was a member of the Masons, Elks, Fleet Reserve. Eagles and Moose Lodge.
Walt had many passions he shared with his children. With his daughter Marsha, his love of cooking and baking. Vicki, woodworking. The boys Kevin and Wally he instilled the love of nature. Walt and Sharlene took their family on many camping trips in the US in their 5th wheel. His pet of choice was Pomeranians.
Walt was preceded in death by his wife Sharlene, daughter Marsha, brother Dale Zwieg and his parents (Walter and Eva).
Survivors include children Vicki Zwieg, Kevin Zwieg and Walter Zwieg Jr. Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. A sister Ruth (Venancio) Jo and her family. Christopher, Matthew and Kathryn Jo.
Walt was a amazing husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed and much loved by all he left behind.
Services will be held at Miller Woodlawn Funeral home on Friday February 4, 2022 at 12pm.
