Amaza Helen (Moore) Stark was born in Rich Square (North Hampton County), North Carolina on October 23, 1915. She was the sixth child and third daughter born to Willie Paul Moore and Texanna Walden Moore. She was married to Willie W. Stark, Sr. for 48 years. Amaza and Willie were the parents of Willie W. Stark, Jr. and Charlene Stark Holmes. Amaza was an active member of Willow Oak A.M.E. Church, in Rich Square, N.C., and later in life she attended Reid Temple A.M.E. Church in Glenn Dale, MD.
After finishing her high school education, she relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1936 where she entered the Apex Beauty College and finished a six-month course, plus a two-year apprenticeship in order to become a licensed beautician. Mae (as most of her family and friends called her) loved her work as a beautician, and viewed every new opportunity to work in her profession as a privilege. She felt to be a well-groomed person the hair was your crowning glory. Mae worked as a beautician until health problems caused her to retire from the work she loved.
Mae lived at her home in Washington, D.C. for over 50 years. There she was active in her civic association becoming a member of Block Club #6. She greatly enjoyed their activities and participated fully. Known for her baking skills, her cakes were always requested for bake sales and special occasions. Leaving her home because of age and health related issues was one of the hardest things she had to do. She loved her home and neighborhood. 511 Ingraham Street, N.E. will always be home to her.
Mae was the last of her 7 brothers and 3 sisters to be called into God’s care. They along with her parents, husband and son are all waiting there to welcome her. She leaves to cherish her memory, one daughter, Charlene Stark Holmes (son-in-law, Benjamin) of White Plains, MD., daughter-in-law, Gail J. Stark of Laurel, MD., grandchildren, Berch A. Kearns, III (Nia) of Charlotte, NC., Erin C. Snowden (Kevin) of White Plains, MD., Brian K. Stark (Sarah) of Silver Spring, MD., and Stacey C. Stark of Laurel, MD. Also, she leaves seven great-grandchildren, Grayson, Jackson and Mason Snowden, Alexandria Kearns, Abigail, Kenneth and Dallas Stark.
