

Arthur Thomas Nowell was born in Edenton, North Carolina on August 26, 1942, as the only child of the late Arthur Jordan Nowell, and the late Wayola Harris. He was affectionately called “Sonny” by family and friends.
He moved to Washington, DC at the age of thirteen to live with his mother. At that time, he joined Asbury Methodist Church. He attended MacFarland Jr. High School and then went on to attend Theodore Roosevelt High School from which he graduated in 1960. He joined the Army right after graduation in 1960 and served for 3 years as a cook and Executive Chef. He loved to cook and was always experimenting with different dishes.
He attended Carpenter Apprentice Trade School after returning from the Army and later was employed by Blake Construction Company. He ended his work career at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing as Assistant Foreman of the Carpentry Shop.
He united in marriage with his wife, Elvina Cleveland, in 1968 and was blessed to celebrate 56 years of marriage. This union produced one daughter, Arvena Nowell, and one son, Brian Nowell.
His favorite activities included: cooking, hunting, archery, gardening, and keeping his yard in immaculate condition. He would cut the grass 2 to 3 times a week during the growing season. He was also an avid watcher of the History channels, and Westerns.
Sonny leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Elvina Nowell; daughter, Arvena; son Brian; three grandsons – David, Brandon, and Khari; four great-grandchildren; three half-brothers – Larry Nowell of North Carolina; Clifford Nowell(Phyllis) of Norfolk, VA; Alexander Nowell(Ethel) of Baltimore, MD; two half-sisters – Garnette Nowell of Tulsa, OK and Gwen Brown(Henry) of Edenton, NC; one Aunt, Ruth Taylor of Bowie, MD; a Brother-in-law, Lewis Cleveland; and one sister-in-law, Wilhelmina C. Rucker(Dennis); a Godson, Alex Abner; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
