Barbara affectionately known as Grandma, (Sis), (BJ), (Ms. Barbara) loved to crochet, play tennis, badminton, bowl, sew, and relax on the beach. In her younger years she loved to model. She was the family's seamstress. She loved shopping for patterns and making quilt blankets for family and friends until her health prevented her from continuing. She even made her daughter Kita's prom dress. She was a great cook, making many of her mom's recipes such as sweet potato pies, and apple and raisin dumplings. She was very adventurous -- loved to travel and talking to people. She attended the Hampton Jazz Festival in Hampton Virginia for many years with friends and family. After retirement, she found a great passion for putting puzzles together -- the more pieces the better! While living at the Newton Green Senior Living Community in Bladensburg, Maryland, she enjoyed including other residents to put puzzles together. You could find a few of her picture paintings hung on her wall in her apartment and some of her favorite framed puzzles are displayed throughout the Newton Green Senior Community Building.
Barbara was a great mother and supporter of her children, Kelvin "Peter Gunn" (deceased) and her daughter, La-Vora "Kita". She loved singing the happy birthday song to her family especially to her grandchildren on their birthdays. She was a very affectionate and giving person who loved her best friends Helen White and Gloria Baltimore and other close dear friends Pat Helm, Monique Paris, and Lorraine Thompson. She loved telling great stories about growing up and always welcomed you in her home with open arms and a warm smile.
