Barbara Rae Matthews

Barbara Rae Matthews was born to the late Jeralean and Walter Covert on December 31st 1949. As a lifelong resident of Washington DC she was educated by the DC public school system and graduated from Ballou High School in August of 1970. She continued her education by taking college courses at Prince George's Community College and the University of the District of Columbia. She would go on to earn her paralegal certification from the Paralegal Institute of Silver Spring Maryland in 1978.

While pursuing her education and establishing her career Barbara married Eric Matthews in June of 1975 at Corinthian Baptist Church in Washington DC. She experienced the great joy of motherhood when she gave birth to her daughter Erica in August of 1977. The couple would later divorce

During her career Barbara worked as a legal Administrative Assistant for some of DC's top law firms. She also established herself as an entrepreneur in her own right by purchasing rental property in her hometown. In her free time Barbara loved dancing, traveling and socializing with friends. She also enjoyed challenging herself and was a firm believer in lifelong education, personal growth and development.

She left us on November 26th 2019 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 69 years old. She is survived by her daughter Erica D Matthews and siblings Vincent, Larry, Hazel, Mattie Covert and Betty Wilson, along with a host of nieces nephews other family and friends.
