Affectionately known as “Miss Bea” she was born Beatrice Venable on September 18,1930, in Halifax, Virginia. One of ten children, Bea lived and worked on the family farm until her marriage to Wallace Garner in June 1949.Two years later, Bea and Wallace moved to Washington, DC with their first child. In Washington, the Garners had four more children. Bea earned her high school GED in 1967, and worked for the Federal Government as a food service worker at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital until her retirement. After retiring, Bea volunteered at a local hospital and as a Foster Grandparent. She was also an active church member and enjoyed working in her yard, doing jigsaw puzzles and watching cooking shows. Unfortunately, Wallace passed away in 1983; Bea lived alone for many years before moving to Richmond in 2008 to live with her son and his family. Bea moved to Coastal Pointe in 2022, and always had a smile for everyone. In addition to her parents and husband, Bea was preceded in death by her son, Brian Garner, brother, Joe Louis Venable, and three sisters, Regina Venable, Hazel Bowie, and Myrtle Garner.
Survivors include her children, Wallace Garner of Bowie, MD; Diane Jeter (Herb) of Supply, NC; Gary Garner (Gloria) of Richmond, VA and Glenn Garner (Patricia) of York, SC; one brother, Lawrence Venable (Virginia) of Jacksonville, FL; one sister, Aleane Ferrell of Washington, DC; 14 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
