Bertha Bugg Brown, the second child and daughter of Bunyon and Elizabeth Bugg, was born on May 9, 1930, in Passaic, New Jersey. She departed this life on February 1, 2023. Her parents settled in Washington, D.C., where she grew up and attended public schools, including Margaret Mary Washington Vocational High School. She attended Southern Baptist Church in Northwest Washington and later began attending Mount Horeb Baptist Church, on Bladensburg Road, N. E., near her home.
Bertha married John Brown and they had one son, Stanley Elliott. Although she and John were divorced, they kept in touch until recently, when her health began to decline. Sadly, Stanley passed away in November, 2015, following a brief illness.
Bertha began her career as a nursing assistant. She was employed at George Washington University Hospital where she lovingly cared for her mother during her illness, prior to her passing. During her career, Bertha was also employed at National Geographic, which, at the time, was located in Gaithersburg, Md. She retired in 1995. During her retirement she wanted to keep busy therefore she began working for an organization that advocates for retired seniors. She also worked as a Foster Grandparent under the Foster Grandparents Program, which is part of Senior Corps.
Bertha leaves behind to cherish her memory, loving sister Ora Theresa Wright, the only surviving sibling, special niece, Geraldine Thompkins, and a host of other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her only son, Stanley, three brothers (Mckinly “Biggie” Bugg, Jerome, and Zonnie Bugg and two sisters (Muriel Hester and Lela Alice Howard). Bertha's kindness and generosity will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
