Caroline, a native Washingtonian, and Paul were married on March 19, 1946, shortly after her graduation from Central High School in Washington, D.C. As a young woman, Caroline had several jobs, including Garfinkle’s department store and the Defense Mapping Agency. Her career, however, was as a full-time mother to four daughters. She was also committed to volunteer service. Caroline spent many years as a leader for the Girls Scouts of America, teaching girls about backpacking, hiking, and camping. But the primary focus of her service was at her church, Presbyterian Church of the Atonement where she and Paul were some of the first members. Caroline taught children’s Sunday School, vacation Bible school, ran the infant nursery, planned Women’s Retreats, served with the Thimbles of Praise, enjoyed outings with the Senior Saints and was a member of the women’s mentoring group. She spent many other hours in service with the civic groups and the Battle of the Coral Sea Association, the Yorktown CV-5 reunion group as well as with her children’s schools. Caroline and Paul traveled extensively throughout the US and Canada in their R.V. She also went to Europe with her daughters. Caroline loved gardening and spending time with her family. All who knew her will deeply miss her.
A memorial service will be held at The Presbyterian Church of the Atonement in Silver Spring on June 29, 2018, at 11:30 AM. A joint inurnment for Caroline and Paul is planned at Arlington National Cemetery.
