

Charlie Butler Jr. peacefully transitioned on May 18, 2026, at the age of 86, after a courageous battle with illness, surrounded by the love of family and friends near and far. Born to the late Rev. Charles Edward “Charlie” Butler and Gertrude Nelson Butler, and husband of the late Mary Ellen Butler. They married in 1964 until passing her {May 1, 2025} Charlie lived a life grounded in love, and family.
Born and raised in Camden, South Carolina, Charlie graduated from high school joining the United States Army at age 18. He served honorably during the Cold War and Vietnam War era, February 15, 1959, and receiving an Honorable Discharge on February 24, 1965.
After his military service, Charlie worked for Colortone Printing Company before beginning a long and distinguished career with the Department of the Treasury – Bureau of Engraving and Printing 1975. He earned numerous Certificates of Completion and Quality Achievement, including recognition in the Postage Stamp Accountability Program (1991) and advancement to Level 2 Bookbinder Supervisor (1999). His work took him overseas to obtain approved printing materials for the Bureau. He retired with honor in 2004.
Charlie continue to share his love of family, vibrant spirit, sharp fashion sense, and infectious joy, cheering on the Washington Redskins (“GO SKINS”) and love of sports, playing the lottery,
visiting the casino, enjoying Sunday dinners, hosting backyard gatherings, listening to Oldies but Goodies. Taking many road trip all with his partner later in life Mary Watson until his death. If you ever needed a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen, Charlie was that person.
Charlie cherished his role as a father to Eric Charles, Ivye Annette, Constance LaRue, Robin and LaQuiche Rena’el Butler, and the late Rodney Steven Butler. He was the grandfather of 9, great grandfather of 7, and great great grandfather of 1.
He is also survived by his siblings: Catherine Watkins, Diane and Soyna Butler, William, and Robert Butler and 2 sisters in law and 2 brothers in law.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Susie Mae Watkins and Elizabeth Butler, His life was full, his love was deep, and his presence was a blessing to all who knew him. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to shine through the hearts of those he leaves behind.
A Public Visitation will be held at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, Little Church, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, Maryland 20722, on June 13, 2026, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, Little Church, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, Maryland 20722, on June 13, 2026, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
Interment will take place at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Highway, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623, on July 9, 2026, at 1:00 pm.
