Constance graduated from Dunbar High School, Washington DC. For a short time after high school, she attended Bellevue School of Nursing in New York. Constance, lovingly known as “Connie” met and married the late James Childress, with whom she spent 62 years of matrimony. The couple bore three children, the late James David, Karen Anita and Karl Eugene Childress. She began her career with the US Department of Navy as a clerk- typist. Connie worked her way through the ranks and became a management analyst until becoming a GS-13 Chief of Directives, Medicine and Surgery Bureau at the Department of Navy where she served for 35 years. She believed in self-help and improvement and was a member of the leadership organization International Training in Communication, where she held officer and chairman positions.
Connie was active in other organizations and was a member of the Eastern Star and was appointed a term as Worthy Matron. She was also a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, where she and her husband served on the vessel “ Karen Anita”, lovingly named after her daughter. Connie was a devoted mother and wife. She hosted many Thanksgiving Day celebrations for her family and friends. She was close to her brothers and sister and often arranged family reunions at her Summer home at Columbia Beach, Shadyside Maryland. Connie also loved to travel and took many cruises with her late husband. She was a child of God and was a faithful member of Capitol View Baptist church for more than 60 years.
Connie leaves to cherish her memory, her brother Eric and Irene Allen, daughter Karen Anita, son Karl Eugene Childress, grandchildren Javar and Janel Childress, daughter-in-law Raymona Harris, sister-in-law Shirley Allen and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
