Crystal aka Crissy-Lov aka Skky. Born February 7, 1970 to Joe L. Thurman and Gloria E. Covington. Given the name Crystal Darlene Delyght Eliza Covington Thurman. She took great joy in her long unique name and being the First born.
Crystal was born in Washington, DC and attended DC public schools. She was a Girl Scout, in the Young Marines, and participated in the youth organization “Creative Minded Youth”. She loved life and gave of her time, talents, and resources to improve the lives of others. She focused her kindness on people beaten down by life’s hurts and disappointments, feelings she too experienced.
After Ballou High School Crystal went on to pursue a career in Cosmetology. She had a gift for creating eye catching hair styles for the young and older generation alike and making fashion statements that caused heads to turn.
Crystal later graduated from the Hair Academy in New Carrollton, Maryland. She worked at Fresh Cuts in Washington, DC. Crystal held jobs in office cleaning, housekeeping, event setup and care giving for the elderly. She volunteered and worked at several non-profits in Washington, DC. Barry Farms Community Center, Martha’s Kitchen, and SOME. She received her ServSafe/Food handler certification in 2019 and began cooking for several elderly and disable neighbors.
Crystal is the absolute favorite Aunt; she created the fun. She first was always the hair and fashion stylist for them. She had sleepovers, movie nights where her favorites were Crooklyn and Ace Ventura Pet Detective and was the scary movie queen. She showed up for birthday parties, she even created a backyard “slip & slide” with trash bags and baby oil. Crystal took her nieces and nephews Trick or Treating, to DC Museums, Downtown DC for 4th of July events, and once created an Easter egg hunt inside her apartment. Amusement parks were one of her favorite places, she was the aunt who would ride roller coasters, each one again and again.
Crystal was a beloved daughter, loving mother, big sister, and a loyal friend. She is survived by her mother Gloria Thurman, her daughter TraShawnikia Thurman, her son Brandon Adams, and foster son Alando Blount. Sisters Christine Whitaker-Moses (Fred), Sherrick Thurman, LaTrice Thurman-Hall (Rodney) Destiny Rogers, and Brother Michael Thurman. Nephews Damon Bell, Charles Whimbush, Darrion Thurman, Josiah Thurman, Joseph Colbert, Colin Whitaker, Jordan Diamond, and Kendrick Corley. Nieces Dana Whitaker, Joella Thurman, Courtney Burley, and Joesephyne Demarr. Her special friends Carter Wiggins and Danielle Weston.
Crystal was preceded in death by her father Joe L. Thurman and her brothers Eric L. Corley and Damon A. Whitaker.
