Donald was born on October 30, 1961, in Richmond, Virginia to Mary Elizabeth Aikens. He was the fifth of six brothers and one sister. He migrated from Richmond with his mother, finally settling in Washington, DC in the 1970s.
Donald completed trade school at Lincoln High School and worked for many years as a carpenter for multiple construction companies in the DMV. He also spent many hours repairing and renovating the homes of family and friends, often for little to no money. He preferred a good meal and sweets.
Donald loved children, animals and playing practical jokes. He liked helping random people in stores like Lowes and Home Depot, but his passion was Christmas. Donald would dote on people at Christmas time and had been known to pick a random person to shower with gifts which often took them hours to open. Each year he outdid himself with his generosity.
Donald was preceded in death by his son Jeremiah Aikens; mother, Mary Elizabeth Aikens; brother Alonzo Aikens; grandparents David Lewis Aikens, Sr. and Estelle Aikens; Uncles Robert Simms, Dempsey and David Lewis Aikens, Jr.; and great-nephew Kyron Aikens.
Donald leaves to cherish his memory, four brothers Willie James Sr., Reginald (Veronica), Anthony (Tawana), and Darrell (Toni) Aikens, sister Charlene (Melvin) Thompson; one uncle Edward (Esther) Aikens, Sr.; one aunt Thelma A. Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.fort-lincoln.com for the Aikens family.
