Dorothy James, affectionately known as Lulu was born on Wednesday, May 16, 1955, at D.C. General Hospital, in Washington, D.C., as the third daughter to the late Lloyd J. James, Sr. and Dorothy V. James. After a brief illness, Dorothy suddenly transitioned from her life on this earth to begin her new life in heaven on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.
Dorothy was educated in the D.C. Public Schools and graduated from Cardozo High School in 1972. She received Christ as her Savior and was a member of the Pilgrim AME Church. Dorothy was employed as a Direct Support Specialist for the D.C. Family Health Service.
Her love for her family was immeasurable. Dorothy was a loving mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a cheerful giver who expressed her love through cooking and purchasing gifts for her loved ones.
Dorothy leaves to cherish fond and loving memories to a significant other, Carlings S. McPhail, Sr. and to a devoted friend Eugene Isaac, Sr.; 1 daughter, Darnita R. McPhail; 2 sons that preceded her in death Carlings S. McPhail, Jr. and Eugene Isaac, Jr.; 4 grandchildren Devin C. Lofton, William E. Lynch, Juliana Isaac and Imani Isaac; 2 brothers David James (Gladys) and Nathaniel James-Bey (Diane) and 2 brothers that preceded her in death, Lloyd J. James, Jr. and Phillip James; 1 sister Geneva Ruffin; and 2 sisters that preceded her in death, Betty Gibson and Annette James; 6 Nieces Stacy Ruffin-Smith (Robert), Annette Gibson, Lynnette Gibson, Kandis Ruffin, LaTonya (Granny) Ruffin, and Reshawner Benjamin; 5 Nephews Richard Gibson, Tyrone Hector, Antony James, Phillip James, Jr., and Ronald Wilkins, Jr. who preceded her in death; 3 great nephews; 7 great-nieces; 8 great-great Nephews; 2 great grandchildren and 1 great niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
