Eugene Quincy Hawkins, son of the late Mamie and Bill Hawkins, was born August 29, 1937 in Chesterfield, South Carolina. Eugene transitioned from this life to his eternal resting place on October 26, 2020 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Maryland.
Eugene grew up in Hartsville, South Carolina. At a young age he became a member of Ousleydale Baptist Church and continued as a member until he moved to the Washington DC area in 1959. He lived in the area for the remainder of his life. In 1965, he married Tressie L. Hawkins, and out of this union, they had one son, Corey E. Hawkins on October 16, 1970. Eugene and Tressie were married for 43 years until she transitioned from this life on October 29, 2008.
Eugene had a successful career as a welder. He began this career in the early 1960s, as an apprentice at Thrifty Ironworks. He moved on to E. W. Mangold Ironworks, and then became self-employed. When he was not working, he enjoyed fishing, traveling and…the casino. He was also enjoyed watching sports, especially baseball. His favorite football team was the Dallas Cowboys.
Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Tressie L. Hawkins, his sisters Marguree Saliim and Dorothy Evans and his brother Willie N. Hawkins. He is survived by Emily Gillyard, long-time friend of the family; children: Corey E. Hawkins (Edith) of Bowie, MD; Gloria Lester (Leonard) of Hawkinsville, GA; Phil Taylor (Maise) of Pompano Beach, FL; and James Thomas (Robin) of Hawkinsville, GA; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters: Berneatha Blackwell of Washington, DC; Alma Hayes of Princeton, WV; and Evelyn Marine of Suffolk, VA; brothers: James Hawkins (Odessa) of Columbia, SC; Lee Hawkins (Eva Mae) of Hartsville, SC; and Roy Hawkins (Bessie) of Hartsville, SC. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Affectionately known as “PaPa”, “Gene” and “Hawk,” Eugene touched the lives of many in his own special way.
