Eula Mae Everett of Capitol Heights, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. She was at home, surrounded by family and friends. Eula was born on December 5, 1955 in Sumter, South Carolina, the fourth of nine children to Willean and Willard Wells, Sr. While in elementary school, Eula’s family moved to Washington, DC, where she attended DC public schools. After attending H.D. Woodson High School, Eula worked for American University, and then George Washington University where she retired. After retiring, Eula worked at Lafu Group for Boys as a counselor, and then she opened her home to provide daycare services for relatives and families in her neighborhood. In 1990, Eula married her husband James A. Everett, Jr. of Washington, DC, and they purchased a home together in Capitol Heights next door to Eula’s mother Willean. James and Eula loved each other through thick and thin, and they took care of each other until Eula’s last day.
Eula was baptized at and a member of The Sanctuary at Kingdom Square. She joined the True Praise Dancers ministry and was an usher with her good friend Ms. Rose Coehins.
Eula loved being surrounded by her family. She enjoyed cooking for them (everyone loved Eula’s macaroni and cheese and fried chicken wings!), watching all the kids play outside, celebrating her birthday and holidays together, having lively conversation with her siblings, eating crabs and cooking on the grill in the summertime, planning Easter egg hunts for all the kids, and taking family trips together. Eula loved to travel with her husband James; they traveled up and down the East coast and cruised the Caribbean many times. She also loved visiting Las Vegas; that was her favorite place to travel. Most of all, Eula loved her son Billy. It made her so happy when they spent time together, or when he’d call and they’d talk for hours.
Eula also enjoyed shopping and talking to her friends. She liked to sit outside at the top of her porch talking to her neighbor Ms. Barbara or playing games on her phone.
It meant so much to Eula to have the love and support she received from her nephews Andrew Mallory and Delonte Washington and grandnephew DeMonte Wells; her family is grateful for all they did.
Eula was preceded in death by her mother and father Willean and Willard Wells, Sr.; mother- and father-in-law Mabel and James A. Everett, Sr.; and sisters Barbara Hawkins and Bridegette Wells. Eula is survived by her husband James A. Everett, Jr.; her children James A. Everett, III, Ernest “Billy” Wells (Maria), Renee Everett, and Marcus Cary; grandaughters Alijah Everett and Ava Jones; grandson Michael Williams, Jr.; sisters Marjorie Canty (Melvin) and Germaine Wells; brothers Cornell Wells, Sr. (Margaret), Willard Wells, Jr. (Marilyn), Ralph Wells, Sr., and Kevin Wells; brother-in-law Gregory Everett; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at The Temple of Praise on Thursday, February 18, followed by burial services at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
