Eula Mae Ratliff, the daughter of the late Hall Funderburk and Bethel B. Deese was born on June 12, 1933, in Chesterfield, South Carolina. She slipped into eternal rest, after a brief illness on February 15, 2019.
Mae as she was affectionately known grew up knowing Jesus Christ and accepted Him as her Lord and Saviour. She became a member of Second Baptist Church Southwest in Washington, DC on July 22, 2017.
Mae and her mother Sis (as we called her) moved into Greenleaf Senior Dwelling in December 1994 and she remained there until after her mother’s passing. Mae was kind and loving and did her best to help those who needed help. She volunteered for Seabury Ward 6 and was 1 of 43 honorees recognized and received a Certificate from Right Rev. Mariann Budde Bishop of Washington, at the 2016 Senior’s Celebration at the Washington National Cathedral. Mae spent many years in the cafeteria/recreation room making everyone eat at the Greenleaf Senior Dwelling. Her fun and joy came when she was participating with people and playing what she loved BINGO. She attended all holiday gatherings and dressed for the occasions and was not going anywhere looking shabby. She truly enjoyed laughing with family and friends.
Mae loved her some Popeyes Chicken, oysters and shrimp. Antoine and I would take her, her favorite food when she asked or we would surprise her. She also enjoyed coloring and crossword puzzles. Nadia was my right arm and made sure she was taken care of when I had to go out of town on business. She was so proud of James, Jr. (BJ) for attending his second year of college. And let us not forget those REDSKINS. Whether they were winning or not, they were her team.
Her two brothers preceded her in death (Troy and Cecil Funderburk), she leaves to cherish her memory a beloved granddaughter Donnetta Poindexter (James, Sr.); Seven children, Leo Ratliff (Mary); Judy Robinson (Tee); Bertha Hall (Junior); Diane Grier (Donnie); James Lee Ratliff; Barbara Lampkin (Gregory) Regina Froneberger (Rick); she also leaves to celebrate her life one sister-in-law (Genieve Funderburk); Grandchildren (12); Great-Grandchildren (33), and Great-Great-Grandchildren (17); nephews, nieces and a host of other family members and friends.
