Gabriel Mejia was born on August 12, 1987, in Washington, D.C., to Napoleon and Catarina Mejia. The youngest of six siblings, he spent his early years in Mt Rainier, Maryland, where he attended school through college. In his twenties, he moved to Utah to continue his education, spending several years there before eventually settling in Brooklyn, New York.
Gabriel was fearless and always ready for an adventure. He had a natural talent for almost anything he tried, from climbing onto the roof as a child to skating down a steep hill on his first attempt—falling, getting up, and trying again without hesitation. He loved sharing his passions with his family, whether it was gaming, rock climbing with his siblings, running a 5K Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, ice skating, or continuing the cherished tradition of Christmas morning movie outings. Family was everything to Gabriel, and he was deeply loved in return. His presence filled every gathering with warmth, laughter, and unforgettable moments.
A man of many talents, Gabriel pursued his education at the University of Utah, where he majored in business, management, marketing, and related support services. During his time in Utah, he discovered two great loves. One was his passion for hardcourt bike polo, a sport that became an essential part of his life. He immersed himself in the bike polo community, traveling across states and countries, winning tournaments, and building lifelong friendships. It was through this very community that he met the love of his life, Jessica.
Another of Gabriel’s great passions was photography and videography, which he transformed into a profession. His creativity knew no bounds—whether behind the camera or in the kitchen. He shared his love for cooking with his mother, who similarly showed their love through expertly curated meals. Homemade pizza being one of his specialties, he often baked pizza for his teammates at polo matches in a portable pizza oven. Above all, he wanted to share his love for bikes, inspiring others to embrace the joy and freedom they bring.
Gabriel’s life was defined by his adventurous spirit, unwavering positivity, and ability to make any place feel like home. He was known for his compassion, generosity, and sharp wit—qualities that left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Gabriel Mejia, 37, passed away on February 24, 2025, at his childhood home in Mt Rainier, Maryland. He is survived by his parents, Catarina and Napoleon Mejia; his partner Jessica; his sisters, Roxana, Rosa, and Sinia; his brothers, Isaias and Jose (Tito); and his beloved nieces and nephews (Jennefer, Samantha, Issac, Brian, Alex, Vincent, Bella, Camila and Alicia). His absence leaves a void in the hearts of his large extended family and his even larger friend family, but his memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
