Dr. Godwin Oyewole had his primary education at Yaba Methodist School, Sabo. Following in his father’s footsteps, proceeded to the Methodist Boys’ High School, (MBHS) Lagos, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1957. Between 1957 and 1960 he had a crowded working career. He worked at the Pathology Department, Lagos; the Graphic Art Department of the Federal Ministry of Information and later at the Ministry of Youth and Social Welfare. He was deeply involved in Youth development activities especially the Boys’ Club Organization. He was one of the early participants of the Citizenship and Leadership Training Course in the Cameroons. In September 1960 he immigrated to the United States of America to further his education.
Dr. Godwin Oyewole was always a busy man. His starting point in America was the State University of New York, New Paltz where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Micro-Biology in 1964. He then proceeded to graduate work in Medical Parasitology at the University of Chicago where he met his wife Saundra Herndon Oyewole. Following his studies in the world of science he joined the Prudential Insurance Company where he became a manager. Whilst at Prudential, he went to study at the Loyola University, Chicago in 1970 and earned a Master of Business Administration degree.
Dr. Godwin Oyewole earned his Doctorate in Education in Communication from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He pursued a career in Broadcasting and Communication and was appointed business manager if WFCR-FM in Amherst, Massachusetts. Within a short time, he was made the general manager. He was subsequently appointed to the board of National Public Radio.
Dr. Godwin Oyewole rose quickly in the field of Communication and Radio Management. Seeking another challenge, he decided to study law and earned a Juris Doctorate (JD) from Georgetown University Law Center in 1980. While at Georgetown he was an editor of the Georgetown Law Weekly. In 1981, he was drawn back into radio by the challenge of creating a new radio station in of the largest in the USA. Obtaining the unused radio license of American University, he started WDCU FM 90.1 at the University of the District of Columbia. In 1984, he earned his second degree in law, an LLM from Georgetown. After earning his JD, he joined the legal department of the National Cable TV Association, Washington, D.C. He then entered private practice and worked as an appellate and trial attorney in the Washington, D.C. area. In 2001, he earned a Legal Education Certificate from the Norman Manley Law School, University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica.
For 10 years, he owned the Market Square Florists Shop at the Market Square in Washington, DC.
Dr. Godwin is survived by his wife of 49 years Saundra; his sons, Tunde (Harriet) and Kolade; his daughter, Aramide (Edwin); five grandchildren, Kira, Kyra, Hank, Caspar and Griffin; other relatives and friends.
Family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 22 from 12:30 p.m. until of funeral service 1:30 p.m. at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD 20722. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
