Harleen was educated in the Public Schools of the District of Columbia and was a graduate of Eastern High School. During her high school years, she met the love of her life, Abraham Matthews, Sr. They married on March 1, 1959, and shared 34 wonderful years together before his passing on November 28, 1993.
Born into the Baptist faith, Harleen’s spiritual journey evolved as she studied and embraced the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She found great joy in reading the Word of God and valued sharing her faith with everyone she encountered. Her dedication to scripture was a cornerstone of her life and an inspiration to those around her.
Known for her unwavering commitment to every task she undertook, Harleen worked as a secretary at the Federal Trade Commission in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She later chose to leave the workforce to devote her time to raising her children, who were the focus of her life. After a few years, she returned to her career, working at Tudors College Shop and later as a patient intake analyst at Saint Elizabeths Hospital.
Harleen had a zest for life and relished the simple joys: traveling, long drives during the vibrant fall season, and listening to music along the way. She loved spending time with family and friends, especially over spirited games of spades and Pokeno. Harleen was a warm and generous soul who welcomed everyone into her fold. She touched the lives of all who met her, offering comfort, love, and wisdom. Her words will remain etched in the hearts of those who knew her, reminding us to forgive, love, and cherish each moment.
Harleen leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She will be deeply missed by her children: Abraham Matthews, Kevin (Jacqueline) Matthews, Sonia Adams (Derek Davis), Veronica Matthews, Danita Matthews, and Daniel Matthews. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren: Jewel Matthews, Diane (Travis) McLaurin, Kevin Matthews Jr., Christopher Thompson, and Michelle Latimore; and her adored great-grandchildren: Caleb Matthews, Brooke McLaurin, and Baylor McLaurin. She is also remembered fondly by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Harleen’s love and light will continue to guide and inspire us all. May she rest in eternal peace.
A visitation for Harleen will be held Sunday, January 26, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm.
