

Harold William Carroll, Sr., age 90, received his heavenly rest on June 24, 2025 in the hospice unit of the VA Hospital in Washington, DC. Mr. Carroll was born in Washington, DC in 1934 at Freedmen’s Hospital to John Morris Carroll and Mary Ellen Carroll. He grew up in both Washington, DC and Croom in Southern Prince George’s County. Mr. Carroll follows the last of his predeceased siblings Kenneth F. Carroll, Ralph E. Carroll and Gladys F. Johnson. In 1952 he enlisted in the United States Airforce and served two years in the DC National Guard before his discharge in 1960.
After leaving the military, Mr. Carroll went to work for the US Postal Service and later became a maintenance worker at Walter Reed General Medical Hospital where he would retire after 40 years of service. In 1953 he married Estella Louise Owens (deceased) and together they raised 8 children, Natalie, Nadine, Mary, Kenneth, Thomas (deceased) Harold, Jr., Marie and Nicole. He leaves as his legacy 11 grandchildren, Rashad (Tony) Sumner, Harold Sumner (deceased) Michael Sumner, Angelica Carroll, Andrea Carroll, James Coleman, Jameela Carroll, Xavier Carroll, Thomas Carroll, Zawadi Carroll, Kenneth Carroll III. 7 great grandchildren, Tariq Sumner, Messiah Sumner, Naimah Sumner, Anthony Estes, Elijah Estes, Golden White, Shaun Carroll and a great-great grandchild Mecca Sumner. Harold William Carroll, Sr. will be remembered by his coworkers and friends as a man who loved his family, community, a good game of poker or bid whist and he will always be known for his love for music, especially jazz.
Homegoing services will be held on Mr. Carroll’s 91st birthday on Tuesday, July 22nd at Ft. Lincoln Cemetery. A visitation for Harold will be held from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM followed by a celebration at 1:30 PM followed by an interment at Fort Lincoln Funeral Cemetery, 3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to WPFW 89.3 FM in Mr. Carroll’s name.
