Harold Lorenzo Chavis Jr.

Harold was raised in Washington D.C. and graduated from Mackin High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1983-1986.

Harold was a loving partner, son, brother, uncle, and father to his only son Jermel and to his grandsons Tristian and Mateo. A fan of the Washington Commanders and the Nationals, Harold rooted for the home teams and when he could, attended games with his son and grandsons. Harold had many other interests. As the son of a musician, he had great appreciation for music. He was also known to be a good cook and he enjoyed family gatherings, especially when Maryland crabs (his favorite local food) were served.

His friends and colleagues knew Harold to be a reserved man who was hard-working and very knowledgeable about all kinds of vehicles. Following his tour of duty in the military, he held several positions, almost all involved driving. In the 1990’s, he worked for the Gold Line Bus Company where he conducted sightseeing tours of Washington D.C. – a job that he took great pride in as it gave him an opportunity to share information on the city’s culture and history with a focus on African American landmarks. Harold’s family and friends enjoyed hearing his historical insights into Washington D.C. when they spent time with him.

Harold was also a proud federal government employee with over 22 years of service as a tractor trailer operator for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in May 2026. Just before his retirement, Harold married Shannon Carrier, his companion of 8 years. This past June, family and friends joined Harold and Shannon to celebrate both their marriage and his retirement.

On the morning of August 10, 2026, Harold went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Chavis Sr., stepfather Charlie Robinson and stepsister Idee Robinson.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Shannon Carrier Chavis, mother Julia Ann Hurt Robinson, son Jermel Chavis (Gabrella) and grandsons Tristian and Mateo Chavis, his twin sister Carol Chavis Robinson, step brothers Kevin and Reginald Robinson, stepson Shawn Nanni, and stepdaughter Cheyann Nanni along with a host of family and friends.
