
Herbert Hoover Bonnette was born on April 30, 1929 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was one of 11 children to James and Leler Bonnette. Herbert attended his primary education in Orangeburg, SC. Herbert gave his life to Christ as a young man in his teens. His love of the Lord never wavered. After High School, Herbert moved to Washington, D.C. with family and soon after joined the U.S. Coast Guard. Where he served for four years with Honorable Discharge. Thereafter, Herbert began his employment with the Federal Government, where he remained employed for 50 years, ending his employment at the White House serving Presidential Appointees and subsequently retiring with many accolades and honors.
While residing in Washington, D.C., Herbert met the love of his life, Joyce Dickerson and joined in holy matrimony in 1955 until Joyce’s untimely passing in 2015. From that union, they had two children, daughter Jennifer and son Herbert. Herbert’s love for driving took the family on many vacations around the US. Herbert enjoyed serving the Lord first and foremost, he served at Brown Memorial AME Church for over 60 years in many capacities. He served as the President of the Usher Board for 20 years, also, he served as a Steward for many years and was a standing member. Of the church. He received the “Man of the Year” award for his dedication, commitment and loyalty to Brown Memorial AME. Brother Bonnette also assisted church members with transportation to and from church on many occasions. Everyone that knew Herbert knew he would never be late and often early, he was a very punctual person. Herbert also had a love for bowling, cooking, and loved to fellowship with family and friends. He was also a sports enthusiast and an avid “Redskins” fan.
Herbert was a kind and loving person who loved his family dearly and was legendary for hosting cookouts with his famous “smoked turkey” “bbq ribs” and “baked beans”.
Herbert was cherished and loved by his family, friends and anyone who was in his presence.
Herbert was preceded in death by his loving wife Joyce and daughter Jennifer. Memories are left to be cherished by his son, Herbert and his grandchildren, Marcus, Corey, Aliyah, Epiphany and one great-grandchild, Sage. He leaves a host of nieces, nephews, sister-in-law Phyllis Bonnette and family and friends.
A visitation for Herbert will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Brown Memorial AME Church, 130 14th St NE, Washington, DC 20002. A celebration of life will occur Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 11:00 AM. A service of committal and interment will occur Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 1:30 PM at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
