He is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 50 years, Lauri E. Martin; his children, Courtney Martin (Jennifer Dederich), Danielle (Marco) Mendes, and Lauren Martin; and his cherished grandchildren, Lev, Galit, Otto James, Lola, and Elly. He is also lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Jim was preceded in death by both parents, M. Clare and William Martin, and his brother Donald Martin.
Jim graduated from Northwestern High School and soon after began what would become a remarkable 43-year career with Giant Food. Known for his dedication and steady work ethic, he built a career defined by loyalty and integrity.
A lifelong learner, Jim was a “forever student” with an insatiable curiosity about the world. He loved reading National Geographic and Condé Nast Traveler, always eager to explore history, seek truth, and better understand the world around him.
To his family and friends, Jim was many things— Chief, Uncle Jim, but most proudly, he was “Opa.” His love for his wife, children, and grandchildren was unconditional and evident in everything he did. Their friends were also always welcomed as family, and he made everyone feel comfortable, included, and cared for.
In retirement, Jim embraced life’s simple joys. He became an enthusiastic sports fan and spent 14 years as a University of Maryland Terp Host. He was also a volunteer at the Baltimore Aquarium, a cookie connoisseur, and an avid gardener who took pride in tending to his yard and ensuring each year’s perennials bloomed beautifully. When the flowers came into bloom, Jim would often pause to stop and smell the flowers. He loved to travel, enjoyed the beach, the peace of a beautiful sunset, and treasured time spent with his grandchildren. He had a deep love of music, and his “soundtrack to life” ranged from the laid-back tunes of Jimmy Buffett to the warmth of John Denver and the powerful tenor of Pavarotti.
Jim carried with him a deep appreciation for life’s lessons. He believed in sayings such as “Calm seas never made a skillful sailor” and often reminded others that “If we couldn’t laugh, we would all go insane.” These sentiments reflected his outlook on life—grounded, resilient, and always finding space for humor. Known for his calm presence, quiet strength, and gentle energy, Jim had a gift for striking up a friendly conversation with anyone. His kindness, curiosity, and steady spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. Services will be held on Saturday March 28th at the University of Maryland Memorial Chapel. Visitation will start at 10:15 am with funeral following at 11:00 am, with interment following at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Jimmy Buffett Organization, Singing for Change (note James Martin).
