

Joseph Plymouth Burney, affectionately known as “Bud” was born May 28,
1937, in Kinston, North Carolina and peacefully entered eternal rest at his
Washington, DC home on June 10, 2022. Bud was one of eleven children. He was
preceded in death by his parents Bryant and Sarah Caroline Burney, and wife Ruby
Mae Burney; and siblings; Edgar, Robena, Eugene, Nathan, JC, Arletha, Sarah
Ann, Martha, and Charles.
Bud attended Jones County Public Schools. He and the Burney family were some
of the founding members of the Quaker House Church of Christ, of Kinston, NC.
At an early age Bud became a dad to a baby girl named JoAnn. A few years later,
Bud met the love of his life Ruby Mae Campbell, and they welcomed a baby girl
named Eileen. Wanting a better life for his family, Bud relocated them to
Washington, DC. In 1965 the couple welcomed a son to their union named Joseph.
Bud held various jobs throughout the Washington metro area, until he settled at
Salco Mechanical Contractors of, Rockville, MD, where he retired at age 65.
During Bud’s free time he enjoyed watching sports. He was a big fan of the
Washington Commanders formerly known as the Washington Redskins. Planning
and barbequing for the annual Burney family reunion in North Carolina was
something he looked forward to all year. He received joy in feeding others.
In later life Bud attended the City of Joy Baptist Church, under the leadership of
Pastor Cory A. Thompson. Though not a member, Bud faithfully attended every
Sunday until the pandemic. He enjoyed getting together to volunteer for various
activities at the church and gathering with the men’s groups.
Surviving to treasure memories of Bud are devoted son: Joseph Burney Jr., of
Washington, DC. Daughters: JoAnn Morgan, of Wilson, NC, and Eileen Sutton, of
Suitland, MD. Brother Leroy Burney, of Kinston, NC. Grandchildren JoMaine
Morgan, Lamont Morgan, Christopher Morgan, Brandon Sutton, Autumn Stevens,
Jada Hubbard and Jo’Hanah Burney. Three Great grandsons, a great
granddaughter, and a great great grandson. Special nephew Melvin Burney. A host
of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
