Joseph Tyrone Spann
July 23, 1950 – March 14, 2020
Joseph Tyrone Spann was the fourth oldest son of the late Willie Sr. and Martha (Small) Spann. He was born July 23, 1950 in Washington, D. C. He departed this life on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the Clinton Health Services, Clinton, MD.
Joe lived most of his young life in the Lincoln Heights area. In 1960, he moved with his family, to the East of the River area at 4312 E St., S.E. He attended District of Columbia public schools graduating from Phelps Vocational High School for Boys.
He spent his early work-life as an employee of various restaurants in the Washington metro area. “Tyrone” as he was affectionately known to many, was a gifted self- taught drummer. As a child, he banged on his mother’s pot and pans and the handrails and anything else he could find outside to make music including the rocks in the yard. He used any stick he could find as drumsticks. Neighbors would often holler out of their doors trying to get him to stop the noise. He toured nationally and internationally with his brother, George and “The Dynamic Superiors” for many years. Upon his return home, he joined the gospel group, “The New Generation” which later became “Nate and the New Generation”. With this group he became drummer and vocalist. They received several awards for their musical accomplishments between 2006 and 2019. Being a part of this group, became the joy of his life. Although Tyrone suffered many illnesses and hospitalizations later in life, his first action upon recovery was to return to the group that he loved. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Willie Jr. and Noland Spann, and a sister, Edna (Spann) Bellinger.
He leaves to cherish his memory, sisters, Earline Pryor, Florine Stallings and Sarah Spann; brothers, George and Aaron Spann; an uncle, Prince Small; many nieces and nephews. Tyrone was blessed to have devoted friends, Gina Lawrence and Nate Saunders, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Joe is at rest, he is safe, and he is at home.
