LaVerne Marion Gowin (Stoutsenberger) of Dunkirk, Maryland passed away peacefully holding her daughter's hand on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Regency Park Assisted Living facility in Gambrills, Maryland.
LaVerne was born April 8, 1934 in Loudoun County, Virginia, the second youngest of nine children of Arthur and Helen (Conard) Stoutsenberger. She attended Central High School, in Washington, DC.
Throughout her life LaVerne enjoyed taking photos, dancing, traveling, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. LaVerne's faith and religion were very important to her. She was a member of Jesus the Good Shepherd, where she attended mass faithfully for many years before moving to Regency Park.
LaVerne had a successful career in the Federal Government, working for several agencies since 1953. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service as an Executive Secretary in 2001. LaVerne was a very dedicated employee who rarely took time off. She loved her profession and dressed for success. LaVerne firmly believed in being put together each and every day, and in fact, never left home without her hair and makeup done.
LaVerne married twice and raised four children. She is survived by three children, Steven (Kim) Shinneman, Julia (Michael) Cronin, and David (Kathleen) Gowin; four grandchildren, Nicole Shinneman, Paul (Christina) Shinneman, Joseph (Shannon) Cronin, and Kayla (Chris) Somerville; and seven great-grandchildren, Richard Samuels, Sydney Samuels, Morgyn Samuels, Joseph Cronin Jr., Cooper Cronin, Danielle Somerville, and Mara Shinneman. She was preceded in death by her eldest son Terry; father and mother; siblings Leroy Stoutsenberger, Clifford Stouts, Marvin Stoutsenberger, Russell (Lloyd) Stoutsenberger, Arthur Waine, Chirley Ullberg, Estelle Mangrum and Robert (Cecil) Stoutsenberger.
LaVerne always loved spending time with family and friends. We only wish she would have been able to enjoy more time with her beautiful great-grandchildren. Our loving mother will be greatly missed.
A celebration of her life will be held at Fort Lincoln Funeral Home, 3401 Bladensburg Road, Brentwood, MD, 20722, on Thursday, January 30, 2025, with burial to follow. Flowers and/or contributions to Hospice of the Chesapeake (https://www.hospicechesapeake.org/giving/donate-now/) or LaVerne's Memorial Fund with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=8698733&fr_id=154020&pg=personal) are equally welcome.
