Liberty Rose Smith affectionately known as Libby was born to LaShawn Smith and Terrance Smith on February 18, 2018 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. She departed peacefully after a hard-fought battle on Saturday, December 20, 2025.
Born a natural fighter, Liberty faced adversity from day one being diagnosed with sickle cell at birth. Due to her condition Liberty spent much of her short but impactful life in the Blood and Cancer Unit at Children's Hospital where she became friends with her doctors and the staff. The internal battle she faced everyday was completely masked by her fiery, lovable, kind, funny and classy personality.
Liberty started her education at Port Towns Elementary in Bladensburg, MD but recently changed schools to Capital Heights Elementary after testing and being placed in an advanced TAG program. Libby per usual wasted no time widening her circle and making new friends. Aside from being an outstanding student Libby had a full schedule of hobbies and playdates including adventures with her mom to the Encanto House and shopping sprees to Claires and Sephora, or road trips with her dad to North Carolina to visit her grandmother and uncles whom she loved playing with and adored.
Liberty's first obsession was DANCE! Soon after learning to walk Libby was busting out her best moves even in public to the surprise and entertainment of her mom, not to mention teaching everyone in her family the latest TikTok dances. In 2022 Liberty joined Adagio Dance Company where her light and charisma truly shined and she created quick bonds with her teammates and coaches.
Liberty leaves behind to cherish her beautiful memory her mother, LaShawn Smith; her father, Terrance Smith; her loving grandmothers, Mary Smith (Rick Wilson) and Robina Denise Smith; grandfather, John Francis; her aunt, Tanya Smith; her uncles Phillip Chase, Octavius Smith, Frederick Smith, Jeremiah Francis; close cousins, Kiara Smith, Cache Murphy, Kobe Murphy, Carter Chase, Christian Chase, Amiyah Smith, Kaison Smith and Bryson Smith.
Liberty will also be fondly remembered by her classmates and teachers from Port Towns Elementary and Capital Heights Elementary; Adagio Dance Company and teammates; her very close friend Clarabelle and The Schreiber Family and all those who have been impacted by her love and light.
