Lue Alice Melchor was born May 6, 1922, in Charlotte, NC. She was the daughter of the late Henry and Katie Welch. Lue Alice departed her earthly life on Monday, April 10, 2023, and has found peace in the bosom of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Lue Alice was preceded in death by her husband, G. Christopher Melchor; parents, Henry and Katie Welch; five brothers, Sam, Will, Frank, Fred, and Henry Welch; three sisters, Ola Coleman, Ellua Weldon and Anna Stewart; and a very special sister-in-law, Carrie Welch.
Lue Alice was educated in Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Public Schools. Upon graduation, she relocated to Washington, D.C., in 1940 to join her siblings. On February 29, 1944, she was united in holy matrimony to G. Christopher Melchor. In 1967 they established roots and purchased a home in the Brookland community where Lue Alice remained a prominent member of the community for over 55 years. Although they never had children of their own, she shared a special bond with her nieces and nephews. Some of her favorite memories were spent taking her great nephews on bus trips to the beach, amusement parks, parades, and sightseeing in downtown Washington. She enjoyed watching game shows, the local news, and reading The Washington Post from cover to cover daily.
Lue Alice was employed by Ram Custom Services until her retirement in 2000. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of her neighborhood church, which she attended every Sunday until she became immobile. She extended a helping hand and provided a home for many boarders and family members that needed a place to stay.
Left to cherish her memory are her caregivers, great-nephew and guardian, Gene (Tracey) Gray; niece, Jacqueline (Pete) Mercer; great-nephew, Henry Welch III; three longtime health care aides, Kebebush Balker (4 years), Haregeweyin Demessie (8 years), and Christine Pimagam Nguekam (9 years); many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
